Using steam distillation, about 800 grams of clear essential clary sage oil (oleum salviae sclareae) can be obtained from 100 kg of the flower clusters and shoot tips of the clary sage. The main components of the yellow to colorless oil include linalyl acetate (up to 75%), linalool (up to 30%), nerolidol, and nerol acetate, as well as the diterpene alcohol sclareol, which can vary greatly depending on the cultivation area, harvest time, and climatic conditions. The clary sage oil is used in the perfume and cosmetics industry.
