Tarragon Oil
Production Method
The essential Tarragon Oil is obtained by steam distillation from the flowering tarragon herb (Artemisia dracunculus). Hot steam serves as the carrier for the volatile organic components of the plant parts. Since the organic components of the essential oil do not mix with water, spontaneous phase separation occurs upon cooling, allowing the pure essential oil to be separated. The yield ranges from 0.2 to 3.0%.
Culinary Use
Young shoots and leaves of tarragon are harvested fresh and used as a spice for fish, poultry, and meat dishes. It is also popular as a flavoring agent for vinegar, mustard, and pickled vegetables (especially cucumbers). The essential Tarragon Oil is not used directly in food and drink preparation due to its high methyl chavicol (estragole) content.
Medicinal Use, Phytotherapy
The components of the essential Tarragon Oil have various health-relevant properties. Tarragon was long considered a demon-repelling herb and used as a remedy for bites from venomous animals and wild dogs. Scientifically, the relaxing effect of essential Tarragon Oil as an antispasmodic (spasmolytic) has been proven for dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps), meteorism (bloating), and spastic colitis (IBS). Internal use and rubs are recommended. It may also inhibit viral replication in cases of gastrointestinal viral infections (antiviral effect). Essential Tarragon Oil also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent in cases of ulcerative colitis. Due to its estrogen-like effect, it supports the course of menstruation (emmenagogue), relieving symptoms of PMS and amenorrhea.
Aromatherapy
In aromatherapy, essential Tarragon Oil is used as a fragrance with a calming (sedative) effect in cases of hyperventilation due to anxiety and panic. It also helps with emotional exhaustion caused by stress or similar factors. A daily dose of one drop of essential Tarragon Oil is recommended as a treatment over about three weeks.
Use in Cosmetics
In cosmetics, essential Tarragon Oil is used in spicy-fresh perfume compositions. However, the majority of global production is used as a flavoring agent for oral care products (mouthwashes, toothpaste). It blends well with cardamom, grapefruit, coriander, neroli, orange, pepper, rose, sandalwood, cedarwood, cinnamon, and lemon.
