Cloves were once among the most valuable traded commodities in the world. During the 16th and 17th centuries, European powers competed for control of the so-called Spice Islands in present-day Indonesia, where the clove tree is native.

A clove tree requires several years before its first harvest but can continue producing flower buds for decades thereafter. Some specimens are known to live for more than 100 years.
