Neroli oil
Manufacturing process
The essential Neroli oil is obtained by steam distillation of the flowers of the bitter orange (Citrus aurantium var. amara). Hot steam serves as a carrier for the volatile organic components. Due to the immiscibility of the organic components of the essential oil and water, spontaneous phase separation occurs upon cooling, allowing the pure essential oil to be collected. The yield is relatively low, between 0.07 and 0.15%.
The plant
The bitter orange (Citrus aurantium var. amara) belongs to the citrus genus (Citrus) in the rue family (Rutaceae) in the order Sapindales. Synonyms include Seville orange, sour orange, and pomeranze. It is a hybrid between pomelo (Citrus maxima) and mandarin (Citrus reticulata), likely originating in southern China. Besides neroli oil, the bitter orange also provides bitter orange oil (from the peel) and petitgrain oil (from leaves and twigs). Today it is cultivated in the Mediterranean, Brazil, and the West Indies. It is an evergreen tree up to 10 m tall, with thorny leaf axils and oval leaves. The tree produces white, highly fragrant flowers, from which rounded, slightly flattened fruits develop. The bright orange peel is easy to remove when ripe (January to February).
Use in the kitchen
The essential neroli oil is generally not used for food or drink preparation. Orangeat is made from the peel, and the pulp is cooked into marmalade.
Medicinal use, phytotherapy
Components of essential neroli oil have several health-relevant properties. Recent studies show strong antibacterial effects. It can be applied as massage, oil bath, rub, or compress for bacterial enterocolitis, bronchitis, pleuritis, or lung tuberculosis. It also works against parasites like giardia. Oil baths or topical applications are recommended. It has phlebotonic effects on varicose veins and hemorrhoids. Additionally, it has spasmolytic and carminative effects for colic, PMS, and bloating, and may strengthen the liver and pancreas. Compresses and oil baths are recommended for these uses.
