Organic Safflower Oil and its use in the food industry
Our organic safflower oil has a pale yellow to yellow color and a mild aroma.
Organic safflower oil is suitable for cooking. Due to its unsaturated fatty acid content, organic safflower oil is not heat-stable, so it is not suitable for frying. Refined safflower oil, however, can be used for frying applications due to its higher heat stability.
Safflower oil is particularly suitable for vegetable dishes, being added before serving. With a high oleic acid content, organic safflower oil is ideal for light sauces, salads, soups, and dips in the food industry.
The dried, but not completely wilted, plant is harvested between August and September, with the seeds being harvested by combine and the petals for further processing as a dye being harvested by hand. Organic safflower oil is obtained from Carthamus tinctorius seeds by cold pressing.
Interesting facts
The safflower's flower color resembles saffron, which explains its nickname “false saffron”. Historically, the safflower was cultivated for the red dye carthamin, while today it is primarily grown for oil production. The ancient Egyptians also used safflower’s coloring properties to dye mummy cloths.
Safflower grows quickly to a final height of up to 1.30 meters. Its leaves are thorny, and the flower resembles a small basket from which up to 150 orange-yellow tubular florets emerge.
