Organic Perilla Oil and its use in the food industry
Our organic perilla oil is obtained from the seeds of the Perilla plant (Perilla ocymoides L., Lamiaceae), also known as Chinese perilla or shiso. It is suitable for use as an edible oil in the food industry.
As an alternative to flaxseed oil, it offers a fine, slightly minty flavor profile that can contribute an East Asian culinary character to recipes. Noodle and meat dishes in particular gain a distinctive note.
Organic perilla oil contains a high proportion of essential Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). When consumed as part of a balanced diet, perilla oil (due to its alpha-linolenic acid content) may help maintain normal blood cholesterol levels.
Interesting facts
Originally native to East Asia, including China, India, Korea, and Japan, the Perilla plant is now cultivated in various parts of the world, including North America and Europe. In Japanese cuisine, Perilla leaves are traditionally used in dishes such as “Umeboshi,” where pickled Ume fruits are wrapped in Perilla leaves.
The Perilla plant is an annual herbaceous plant that typically grows to a height of approximately 0.5 meters. Its oval leaves are long-stemmed and serrated at the edges and may appear in green, purple, or reddish tones.
The small white or violet flowers produce gray to brown seeds. These seeds are cold-pressed to obtain our Organic Perilla Oil.
