Organic milk thistle oil and its use in the food industry

Organic milk thistle oil is obtained from the seeds of Silybum marianum, a Mediterranean plant with a long history of traditional use in Europe. As an edible oil, organic milk thistle oil can be incorporated into dressings, sauces, spreads, cold sauces, and pesto.

As a natural oil with a fatty‑acid profile similar to sunflower oil, our organic milk thistle oil stands out for its naturally high content of vitamin E and silymarin.

Our organic milk thistle oil is obtained by cold pressing the seeds from the plant’s purple, thorny flower heads, followed by settling and fine filtration

Our organic oils are valued not only as food ingredients, but also as raw materials for cosmetic products. Organic milk thistle oil is available for the cosmetic industry.

Interesting things

The plant likely came to Central Europe as a medicinal herb through the Romans and was widely used in monastic gardens. Today, it can be found wild in northern Germany, Denmark, Belgium, and England. It probably originates from the Mediterranean and Western Asian steppes and has spread worldwide.

The root is a deep, spindle-shaped taproot, from which a plant up to two meters tall with many leaves grows. The edges of the milk thistle leaves are densely covered with strong thorns.

Milk thistle oil is extracted by mechanical pressing from the seeds of the purple, thorny milk thistle flower heads.
